Breaking Barriers: The Diamond Industry’s First All-Women Factory

In India, deeply rooted gender roles have traditionally shaped workforce participation across industries—including the diamond sector. Despite being the primary consumers of diamonds and jewellery, women have long remained underrepresented in their creation. Recognising this imbalance, KP Sanghvi took a pioneering step in 2010, becoming the first in the industry to establish an all-women diamond cutting and polishing facility in Surat.

What began as an initiative with just 17 trainees has today evolved into a thriving workforce of over 100 full-time women professionals. Through structured training programmes, women with little or no prior experience are equipped with technical skills, long-term career opportunities, and financial independence. Over time, these professionals have seamlessly integrated into co-ed facilities—redefining industry norms and challenging long-standing perceptions.

This initiative goes beyond employment. With equal pay, maternity benefits, and a safe, supportive work environment, KP Sanghvi has created a workplace where women are empowered to grow, lead, and thrive. It represents a conscious effort to break gender biases and build a more inclusive industry.

The impact of this pioneering initiative has resonated well beyond India. By creating opportunities and removing barriers, KP Sanghvi is not only crafting diamonds—but shaping a more equitable and progressive future for women in the global diamond industry.
